What are asteroids?

Asteroids are rocky leftovers from the early Solar System, orbiting the Sun. Most are in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, but some have orbits that cross Earth's path. A big one hitting Earth 66 million years ago caused a mass extinction, wiping out the dinosaurs, as the story mentions.
