What happens when an asteroid hits?

When CERNQ52 entered the atmosphere, it largely disintegrated. This is typical for small objects. The immense friction and pressure from moving at high speed through our atmosphere cause them to heat up rapidly and break apart. Larger asteroids can survive this process, but even then, the atmosphere acts as a protective shield, slowing them down considerably.
