What happens when the Sun dies?

In about five billion years, our Sun will run out of hydrogen fuel in its core. It will then expand into a 'red giant', growing so large it will engulf Mercury, Venus, and possibly Earth, as the story states. Eventually, it will shrink into a small, dense 'white dwarf'.
