Why are asteroids hard to spot?

CERNQ52 was only seen hours before it entered Earth's atmosphere. Most asteroids are very small and don't reflect much sunlight, making them hard to detect against the vast, dark backdrop of space. Astronomers use powerful telescopes and sophisticated software to scan the skies, but objects like this one can easily go unnoticed until they are very close.
