Chancellor John Healey has doubled the extra levy banks pay on their profits, raising it from 3% to 6% for 15 months from January. The money will help fund energy support, including a £100 payment for 20 million homes. The rise was smaller than the 8% the industry expected, and bank shares climbed after the announcement, with NatWest and Standard Chartered up more than 4%.
