Explained in plain English

What is the bank surcharge?

The bank surcharge is an additional tax on the profits of banks, on top of the standard corporation tax. It was introduced after the 2008 financial crisis to ensure banks contribute more to public finances. The government reviews it regularly, and it's currently a hot topic for the upcoming Budget.
