Why are some places darker?

The story mentions varying darkness across the UK and total darkness elsewhere. This is because the Moon's shadow has different parts. The darkest central part, called the umbra, causes a total eclipse. The lighter outer part, the penumbra, causes a partial eclipse. Where you are relative to these shadows determines how much of the Sun is covered.
