Is it safe to look at an eclipse?

Looking directly at the sun, even when it's partially covered during an eclipse like the one on 12 August, can seriously damage your eyes. The sun's powerful rays can burn the retina without you feeling pain, leading to permanent vision loss. Special eclipse glasses or pinhole projectors are needed to view it safely.
