How often do eclipses happen?

Solar eclipses, like the one on 12 August, occur roughly two to five times a year somewhere on Earth. However, seeing a total solar eclipse from a specific location is much rarer. For example, the last total solar eclipse visible from the UK was in 1999, and the next isn't until 2090.
