What causes earthquakes?

Earthquakes happen when tectonic plates, huge sections of the Earth's crust, suddenly shift and release energy. This story's 7.4 magnitude quake in Colombia was caused by such a movement. The energy travels as seismic waves, shaking the ground and causing damage, especially to buildings not designed to withstand them.
