Explained in plain English

How are earthquakes measured?

Earthquakes are measured using seismographs, which detect and record ground motion. The magnitude, like the 7.4 in Colombia, indicates the energy released at the source. The Richter scale used to be common, but now the moment magnitude scale is more precise, especially for larger quakes.
