What are early warning systems?

Early warning systems detect the first, faster seismic waves from an earthquake and rapidly send alerts before the slower, more destructive waves arrive. This gives people precious seconds to drop, cover, and hold on, or for automated systems to shut down infrastructure. For a country like Colombia, prone to quakes, these systems could save lives.
