How fast do plates move?
Tectonic plates are always on the move, but it's a slow dance, typically at speeds similar to how fast your fingernails grow – around 2 to 10 centimetres per year. This constant, gradual motion builds up immense stress, which, as we saw with the Colombia earthquake, is eventually released in sudden, powerful jolts.
