Why does depth matter?

The depth of an earthquake's origin, or hypocentre, significantly impacts its effects. Deeper quakes, like this one at 187km, often spread their energy over a wider area but cause less intense shaking on the surface compared to shallower ones. This is why no immediate damage was reported despite its 5.4 magnitude.
