How does heavy rain cause collapses?

Heavy rain saturates soil, making it much heavier and less stable. This extra weight and reduced strength can cause tunnels, like those the meerkats dug, or even hillsides to collapse. If the rain is intense and sudden, it's particularly dangerous as the ground doesn't have time to absorb the water gradually.
