What causes waste dump collapses?

Heavy rain, as seen in Guinea, is a major factor. It saturates the waste, making it heavier and less stable. This can lead to a 'liquefaction' effect where the material behaves more like a fluid, causing huge sections to slide down. Poorly managed dumps, often found near vulnerable communities, are particularly susceptible to these deadly events.
