Explained in plain English

What is a flash flood?

Flash floods are sudden, intense floods that happen quickly, often within hours of heavy rainfall, like the 50mm expected in northern England. They are particularly dangerous because there's little warning, and the fast-moving water can cause significant damage, disrupt travel, and lead to power cuts.
