Storm Austen Brings Down Part of Brighton's West Pier

Storm Austen Brings Down Part of Brighton's West Pier

A large section of Brighton's derelict West Pier collapsed into the sea at about 9:30am on Friday as Storm Austen sent huge waves crashing along the coast. Elsewhere, more than 16,000 homes in south-west England lost power and dozens of Cornwall schools stayed shut. The Victorian pier, closed since 1975 and gutted by fires in 2003, faces more battering as Storm Boelo arrives this weekend.
