Chancellor John Healey will scrap standing charges on household gas bills, ending the fixed daily fee that typically costs around £108 a year. He has asked Ofgem to remove the charge in 2027 or as soon as possible afterwards, moving the cost onto unit rates. Treasury figures suggest about 60% of households will save around £45 a year, though higher gas users may pay more.
