Deadly C. diff bug cases rise by 33% in English hospitals since 2020

Cases of Clostridioides difficile, a life-threatening bug causing diarrhoea, have risen significantly in English hospitals. UK health officials found C. diff infections jumped from 9,273 in 2019/20 to 11,752 in 2023/24. The 33% increase between 2020/21 and 2023/24 mainly affects older, frailer patients who recently took antibiotics.
