New gene-editing tech could help treat drug-resistant fungal infections

Scientists at the University of Tennessee are developing CRISPR-GRIT, a gene-editing extension, to fight candidiasis, a fungal infection often resistant to drugs. Cong Trinh received over $900,000 from the National Science Foundation to expand this technology to more fungal species. He additionally obtained a $420,000 award from the National Institutes of Health, which was designated for pinpointing genes responsible for fungicide resistance in Candida.
