Fiji's health minister declares HIV a national emergency

The Pacific nation now estimates one in every 60 adults is living with HIV, a sharp rise from one in 167 five years ago. Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, the health minister, stated on Thursday that a response at outbreak level is now insufficient. New diagnoses climbed 27% last year, with 2,060 recorded in 2025, and the virus was passed from mothers to 59 babies.
