Why do people seek asylum?

People seek asylum when they fear persecution in their home country due to their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership of a particular social group. They are looking for protection and a safe place to live. The migrants in Greece would have applied for asylum, hoping to be granted refugee status.
