What is an asylum application?

Asylum is protection granted by a country to someone fleeing persecution in their home country. In this story, the deportees arriving in Liberia will have the option to apply for asylum there. This means they can seek legal protection and the right to reside in Liberia if they fear returning to their country of origin.
