Why are migrants detained?

Migrants are often detained when they arrive in a country without authorisation, or while their asylum claims are being processed. This can be for security reasons, to prevent them from absconding, or to establish their identity. The Greek centre in the story was a temporary asylum facility, suggesting the migrants were awaiting a decision on their future.
