What's a millimetre of rain?

When the Met Office mentions 20-30mm of rain in an hour, it refers to the depth of water that would accumulate if it all stayed on a flat surface. This measurement helps predict the volume of water and potential impact. For context, 25mm is about an inch, so 75mm over 12 hours is a significant amount of rainfall.
