What is space weather?

Space weather is essentially what happens when the Sun gets a bit feisty. Things like solar flares and coronal mass ejections throw out energy and particles that can travel through space. When these hit Earth's magnetic field, they can cause disturbances that affect our technology, like the GPS systems mentioned in the story.
