What is a lunar eclipse?

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon. This makes the Moon appear to darken or even turn a reddish colour, depending on how much of the Sun's light is blocked. Our story describes a partial eclipse, meaning only part of the Moon will be covered by Earth's shadow.
