Why does the Moon turn red?

The reddish glow of a 'Blood Moon' during an eclipse is due to Rayleigh scattering. Earth's atmosphere scatters blue light more effectively than red light. So, when sunlight passes through our atmosphere to reach the Moon, most of the blue light is filtered out, leaving the red and orange light to illuminate the Moon's surface.
