What happens when a king dies?

When a monarch passes away, their heir immediately becomes the new sovereign. This is why King Haakon took his oath so quickly after his father's death. The ceremony, often called an accession council or similar, formalises their commitment to the country's constitution and its people, marking the official start of their reign.
