How does soil type affect damage?

Soft, loose soils like sand or clay can amplify earthquake shaking, making buildings on them more vulnerable to collapse, even far from the epicentre. This is called liquefaction. Harder rock, like that found in mountainous regions of Colombia, generally transmits less damaging shaking.
