President Donald Trump has imposed new 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, including alcohol, dairy, and auto parts, set to begin on August 19. The tariffs use a rarely invoked 1930 law, the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, which allows tariffs against countries discriminating in trade. Trump also threatened tariffs over Canadian wildfire smoke, claiming Canada is "poisoning" US air.
