Pharmacist: Your cheese, fruit can make medicine fail

Pharmacist: Your cheese, fruit can make medicine fail

A superintendent lead pharmacist has warned that everyday foods including aged cheese, dairy, and certain fruits can dangerously interfere with common medications. Aged cheeses contain tyramine, which can trigger a potentially life-threatening hypertensive crisis in patients taking MAOI antidepressants. Dairy products can bind to antibiotics including tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, significantly reducing absorption. Amir Bhogal of Pyramid Pharmacy Group advises spacing dairy at least two hours from antibiotic doses and consulting a pharmacist about potential interactions.
