Military strikes halt Iran's football, World Cup hopes

Iran's participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, is now in serious doubt following US-Israeli military strikes on the country. Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj said on state television that it was unlikely Iran could prepare for the tournament given the attack. Iran's domestic football league has been suspended until further notice. FIFA said it is monitoring developments and wants a safe World Cup with all teams participating.
