Why do runways need repairs?

Runways are built to be incredibly strong, but constant use by heavy aircraft, plus weather and age, means they need regular maintenance. Cracks or potholes, even small ones, can be dangerous for planes taking off and landing, potentially damaging tyres or even causing more serious issues. This is why Bristol Airport had to shut down for essential repairs.
