Why do delays snowball?
Even a relatively short closure, like Bristol Airport's 14-hour shutdown, can cause huge knock-on effects. Planes and crews are scheduled tightly, so one delayed flight can mean subsequent flights are also delayed, or even cancelled, as aircraft and staff aren't in the right place at the right time. This creates a backlog that takes a long time to clear.
