Explained in plain English

Why are airport runways so long?

Runways need to be long enough for planes to safely accelerate to take off speed and decelerate after landing. The length depends on the aircraft size, weight, and weather conditions like temperature and wind. Heathrow's runways are among the longest, allowing it to handle large international flights, which is why a temporary closure can cause significant disruption.
