Why are eclipse glasses important?

Looking directly at the Sun, even when partially eclipsed, can cause permanent eye damage or blindness. Regular sunglasses aren't safe. Certified eclipse glasses are specifically designed with special filters to block harmful ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light, making it safe to observe the event. This is why they're being distributed at viewing parties.
