Schengen Area explained

The Schengen Area is a zone of 27 European countries that have abolished internal border controls, allowing free movement between them. While most EU countries are in Schengen, some non-EU countries are too. The UK is not part of the Schengen Area, which is why its citizens face these new border checks.
