Yvette Cooper Scraps Plan to Abolish NHS Watchdog Healthwatch

Simon Dawson / No 10 Downing Street, OGL v3, via Wikimedia Commons

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper has dropped plans to abolish Healthwatch England, the independent body that speaks up for NHS patients, after MPs from all parties objected. The watchdog and its 150 local branches will be kept and given a bigger role in flagging concerns about care. Health minister Gillian Merron will confirm the change in parliament today, the latest U-turn on the government's health bill.
