The joint military exercises between the US and South Korea were cut short because Donald Trump wants to restart talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. On Sunday, Trump expressed his displeasure with the drills, describing them as expensive and "hostile" to Pyongyang. South Korea's military confirmed on Wednesday that the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise would end six days early, on Friday.
