A US lab found 14 cases in 2025, a significant rise from one to five annually for most of the period since 2009. The study, by the University of Washington and the CDC, covers 48 confirmed cases across 21 states and Washington DC. Up to 70% of infected individuals die, with about half having healthy immune systems.
