US to close five consulates, risking China filling void
The US State Department is closing five foreign consulates and missions in St George’s, Grenada; Nagoya, Japan; Medan, Indonesia; Douala, Cameroon; and Winnipeg, Canada. The closures follow a review of US foreign relationships after Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025. Democrats argue the move creates a diplomatic vacuum that China, which maintains a presence in three of the locations, could quickly exploit.
