Three of Britain's four Vanguard-class submarines, which carry Trident nuclear missiles, are at sea at the same time for the first time in at least seven years. One is on its usual deterrent patrol, a second is preparing to relieve it and HMS Vigilant is on trials after a lengthy maintenance period. Sources said it was not linked to any direct threat or nuclear escalation.
