Romania shuts its only nuclear plant as river levels drop in heatwave
Romania's Cernavodă nuclear power station has closed because the Danube River's water levels are too low for cooling, a problem caused by Europe's prolonged hot weather. The plant, a source of approximately 20% of Romania's electricity, is anticipated to remain offline for a minimum of 10 days. The Cernavodă plant has shut down only twice since 2003, with the first reactor already off since July.
