Papua's 'eternal snow' glaciers are nearly gone and will vanish soon
The 'eternal snow' on Papua's mountains, near the equator, which have offered climate insights for centuries, is now almost entirely gone. Glacier cover around Puncak Jaya, which measured almost 1,900 hectares in the 19th Century, has now diminished to approximately 16 hectares. Scientists expect the remaining small areas of snow to completely disappear in a year or two.
