The Republic of Naoero is now the official name of the Pacific island nation previously known as Nauru, marking a return to its original appellation. On Wednesday, President David Adeang verified that a national referendum on the alteration was no longer proceeding. European colonisation led to the name Nauru, as the island's indigenous name was modified due to pronunciation difficulties.
