MPs vote down assisted dying bill in surprise Commons defeat

MPs rejected the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill by 286 votes to 270 on Friday, blocking assisted dying in England and Wales before the next general election. Lauren Edwards revived the bill after peers talked out a near-identical version in April. Andy Burnham abstained, having said the debate should pause until social care improves. The result reverses two Commons votes in favour.
