More than 300,000 public sector workers in the Republic of Ireland, including nurses, doctors, teachers and civil servants, began a 24-hour strike. The action is part of a pay dispute with the Irish government, whose minister called it disappointing. Schools were expected to close and thousands of hospital appointments cancelled. A further strike is planned for 21 October, after work-to-rule action by over 100,000 workers.
