Mahmood Scraps 15-Year Settlement Wait for Migrant Care Workers

UK Home Office, CC BY 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood told MPs she has scrapped plans to make migrant care workers already in the UK wait 15 years for indefinite leave to remain. Those earning at least £25,000 who arrived before May 2025 can settle after five years. She also dropped the 15-year wait for all low-income workers, cutting it to 10 years, after strong opposition from Labour MPs and unions.
